Structured data: the part of your website only machines read

Schema.org markup tells AI systems what you offer, where you operate, when you are open and how to reach you, in a format they can read without guessing. Many websites still leave it out.

01.

What structured data is

Structured data is a small block of machine-readable facts embedded in your website's code, invisible to visitors and unambiguous to machines. Where a person reads "friendly local accountancy for freelancers" and infers the rest, a machine reading schema.org markup sees the business type, the services offered, the address, the opening hours and the contact details, stated outright and nothing inferred.

For AI systems that answer questions about businesses, this distinction matters. Prose can be interpreted; markup can simply be read. A business that states its facts in structured data removes an entire category of guessing from every system that describes it.

02.

Why it moves AI answers

An assistant answering "IT support for a ten-person office in Rotterdam" needs a few facts: what you do, who you serve, where you work. If your website states all three in markup, you are easy to place in that answer. If they have to be inferred from photos and prose, you might be placed wrongly, or not at all when the assistant prefers businesses it does not have to guess about.

Structured data also compounds with your other signals. Reviews establish that you are good; markup establishes what you are. The combination of verified quality and unambiguous facts is what an assistant can act on.

03.

Getting it right

Schema.org has types for most kinds of business, from a generic Organization or LocalBusiness to more specific ones, plus Service and Product for what you sell. The two failure modes worth checking for are absence (no markup at all, a common case) and contradiction (markup that disagrees with your visible website or your business profile, such as old hours or an old address). Contradiction is worse than absence: it teaches systems to distrust your data.

Many website platforms can emit this markup through settings or plugins, and it is largely a one-time setup with occasional maintenance, one of the few visibility improvements that is set-and-review rather than ongoing work.

What to take away
01.

Structured data states your facts in a format machines read directly, with no inference and no guessing.

02.

What you offer, where you operate, when you are open and how to reach you are the fields that place you in real customer questions.

03.

Markup that contradicts your visible site is worse than no markup, so keep them in sync.

04.

On most platforms it is largely a one-time setup, and one of the higher-leverage technical fixes available.
