How AI assistants actually pick the businesses they recommend

There is no ranking to climb and no placement to buy. AI assistants compose answers from the signals they can read about you, which means visibility is something you can shape.

01.

An answer, not a results page

When a customer asks ChatGPT or Gemini "which accountant near me works with small startups?", the assistant does not consult a league table of accountants. It composes an answer on the spot, drawing on what it has read about the businesses it can connect to that question: websites, service descriptions, reviews, business listings, articles, maps data.

That composition step is why AI visibility behaves differently from search rankings. Two businesses with similar Google positions can get completely different treatment in AI answers, because the assistant is not ranking pages. It is deciding, sentence by sentence, which businesses it can describe confidently enough to recommend.

02.

Confidence is the currency

An assistant recommends a business when it can say something specific about it: what it does, who it is for, where it operates, why it fits this particular question. If your public information is vague or contradictory, such as a services page that only exists as an image, an outdated address, or three different descriptions of what you do, the assistant cannot build that confidence, and it quietly reaches for a competitor it can describe.

This is also why AI visibility is situational. An assistant might mention a plumber confidently for "emergency callout" and never for "bathroom renovation", simply because the readable evidence supports one story and not the other. Visibility is not one number; it is a pattern across the questions customers actually ask.

03.

What this means in practice

The work is less mysterious than it sounds: make the facts about your business readable, consistent and specific everywhere an assistant might look. Services described as text, one consistent description of who you are for, accurate structured data and a maintained business profile all feed the same confidence the assistant needs.

None of it guarantees a recommendation, and no honest party can promise that. What it does is remove the reasons an assistant has to skip you, and that is the part of the equation a business actually controls.

What to take away
01.

AI assistants compose answers from readable signals. There is no ranking and no paid placement.

02.

Specific, consistent public information is what lets an assistant recommend you with confidence.

03.

Visibility is situational: measure the questions that matter to you, not a single score.

04.

No one can guarantee AI recommendations. You can only remove the reasons to be skipped.
